Research Guides

Practical frameworks for asking better questions of a paper, a figure or a technical document.

Conceptual scientific reading workspace with books, notebook and a molecular model

01 / Define the question

Identify the experimental model and comparison. Keep observations in that model separate from broader assumptions.

02 / Examine the measurement

Find the method, controls and analysis approach. Ask whether the measurement addresses the question and which sources of uncertainty remain.

03 / Read beyond the headline

Compare the abstract with the results and discussion. Note sample size, exclusions, statistical assumptions and limitations. A result in one setting does not automatically establish a result in another.

04 / Keep a source record

Save the DOI or PubMed link, publication date and a note in your own words. Mark observations, author interpretations and unanswered questions separately.

05 / Search deliberately

PubMed offers filters for dates, article types and other record features. Filters may omit records lacking the relevant indexing. Review search terms and filters before treating results as complete.
